A new editorial in Agronomy synthesizes 11 studies on how farming can feed nearly 10 billion people while cutting emissions, conserving water, and reducing chemical use. The research covers agroecological practices, sustainable intensification, and technological innovation including AI and drones. It highlights that future food systems will need both traditional ecological methods and digital tools to measure and reduce environmental impact. The review shows that wastewater reuse and treated agricultural by-products can reduce pressure on freshwater systems and cut synthetic fertilizer use. Studies from Brazil and China demonstrate that cover crops and no-till systems can increase soil carbon sequestration. However, total agricultural emissions in China rose 21% from 2000 to 2020, showing that efficiency gains alone do not guarantee absolute emission reductions. Precision agriculture using digital maps, hyperspectral imaging, and machine learning can reduce pesticide overlap and improve input efficiency. But the article warns that if these tools remain expensive, they could widen the gap between large agribusinesses and smallholder farmers in the Global South. The real challenge is making climate-smart farming affordable and accessible across all scales of production.
