Super6 Proposes Removal-Backed EACs to Pair Carbon Removal with Gas Power Generation

Carbon management firm Super6 Carbon has proposed a new type of energy attribute certificate called the Removal-Backed EAC (RB-EAC). The idea is to pair permanent carbon dioxide removal with existing natural gas power plants to create verifiable low-carbon electricity certificates. Instead of capturing CO2 directly at the plant stack, the RB-EAC retires an equivalent volume of permanent, off-site carbon removal against the plant's emissions. The removal credit is canceled on a recognized registry before the EAC registry issues the zero-emissions power certificate, preventing double counting. Super6 argues this approach can bring verified low-carbon power certificates to market by early 2028, well ahead of the 2030+ timeline for widespread on-site gas capture. The model also offers geographic flexibility by decoupling power generation from the location of geological storage. The company is proposing a minor amendment to the existing CCS-EAC standard to allow this mechanism, which could help build out regional transport and storage infrastructure that direct on-stack capture will eventually rely on.
