SunGas Cancels Beaver Lake Biofuels Project in Louisiana: Market and Regulatory Hurdles

SunGas Renewables has ended development of its Beaver Lake Biofuels project in central Louisiana, citing slow adoption of low-carbon marine fuels, uncertainty around carbon capture and storage, and unresolved financing conditions. The facility was designed to produce 553,000 metric tons of low-carbon methanol annually and capture 1.1 million metric tons of CO2 per year, representing an investment of over $2 billion. The decision highlights the ongoing challenges facing large-scale alternative fuel projects that depend on evolving policy and market demand. SunGas will continue marketing its S1000 gasification technology to other developers and remains active in green methanol, renewable natural gas, and hydrogen projects. The cancellation marks a significant setback for economic development in Rapides Parish, where the project was expected to create hundreds of construction jobs and over 100 permanent positions.
