Sumitomo Chemical Scales Up Bio-Based LCP Production with Biomass Feedstock
global-agriculture.comSumitomo Chemical has moved bio-based liquid crystal polymer (LCP) from lab scale to production scale, using biomass-derived monomers. The company says the material has the same quality as conventional fossil-based LCP, and it plans to send samples to customers as it prepares for mass production. LCP is a high-heat, flame-resistant plastic used in smartphones, automotive parts, and office equipment. Most LCP feedstocks come from fossil resources, so shifting part of the monomer supply to biomass is a step toward lower embodied carbon in electronics and vehicles. Sumitomo uses a segregation approach that keeps bio and fossil feedstocks separate, which makes the bio-based content in the final product easier to quantify than with mass balance accounting. That detail matters for companies that need verifiable carbon footprint data. The announcement does not yet include the share of bio-based monomer or the expected CO2 reduction.
