Sudbury students restore bog ecosystem, learning about carbon storage and biodiversity through hands-on peatland restoration

Grade 6 students from R.L. Beattie Public School in Sudbury took part in a bog restoration project, transplanting native vegetation from a healthy bog near Cartier. They worked with peatland restoration scientist Pete Whittington and environmental science teacher Colin Veevers to restore a local bog, learning firsthand how these ecosystems store carbon and support wildlife. The project combines outdoor education with real environmental impact. Bogs are critical carbon sinks, and restoring them helps mitigate climate change while preserving habitat. Students will continue monitoring the site to track how transplanted hummocks establish over time. This initiative shows how local restoration efforts can engage communities and provide measurable carbon benefits. It also highlights the role of school programs in building awareness of peatland ecology and climate solutions at a grassroots level.
