Study: Reflective Surfaces and Albedo Can Significantly Reduce Urban Carbon Emissions
nationalobserver.comA new study from Concordia University quantifies how reflective surfaces, known as cool surfaces, can lower CO2 emissions by reducing the need for air conditioning. By increasing the albedo of roofs and walls, cities can mitigate the urban heat island effect and lower regional temperatures. Research indicates that a global increase in reflectivity could offset massive amounts of carbon. However, adoption is slowed by rental market dynamics and lobbying from traditional building material manufacturers, suggesting a need for updated building codes and municipal incentives.
