A new study from the University of Washington, published in PLOS Climate, finds that emissions from the top 178 oil, gas, coal, and cement producers will continue to affect the climate for hundreds of years, even if all emissions stopped tomorrow. The researchers calculate that over a trillion tons of CO2 already emitted will keep trapping heat, making future warming largely independent of current reduction efforts. The study strengthens the case for holding major emitters legally accountable for climate damage, as their historical emissions create a lasting burden. It also underscores the urgency of halting new fossil fuel projects, since any additional emissions will extend the climate disruption for decades. For carbon markets and policy design, this means attributing responsibility and costs to past polluters is not just a historical exercise but a necessary part of future climate action.
