Study: Financial Globalization Linked to Green Investment in 41 Major Carbon-Emitting Economies
newswise.comA new study in Letters in Spatial and Resource Sciences links financial globalization to higher green investment across 41 of the world's largest carbon-emitting economies. Using data from 1998 to 2021, the researchers estimate that a 1% increase in financial globalization is associated with a 3.14% rise in green investment over the long run and a 2.81% rise in the short run. The effect is strongest in Europe, followed by America and Asia, which the authors attribute to stronger institutions, climate policies, and sustainable finance markets in Europe. The study measures green investment through environmental technology patents, which the authors note does not capture every form of actual green investment. They also caution that their linear model may produce biased estimates. Even with those limits, the results suggest that international capital flows, when supported by clear regulation and climate policy, can help finance cleaner technologies and renewable energy. Policymakers could build on this by expanding green bonds, creating dedicated international green funds, and tightening rules against greenwashing.
