Study: Beef and Dairy Climate Impact Understated When Methane Measured Over 20 Years
biologicaldiversity.orgResearchers from UCLA and the Center for Biological Diversity looked at 222 foods served in campus cafeterias and recalculated their climate footprint using a 20-year global warming potential alongside the standard 100-year metric. Because methane is over 80 times more potent than CO2 in the short term, beef and dairy emissions came out more than twice as high under the 20-year lens. The study argues that sticking with GWP100 alone undercounts the near-term warming these foods cause. The practical effect could land on carbon labels, institutional purchasing, and agricultural subsidies. A meal that passes a 100-year threshold might fail a 20-year one, which changes how buyers and policymakers should compare products. The team also released a Planetary Calculator that shows both GWP20 and GWP100 results for individual meals, so institutions can see the difference before setting targets.
