Study: A single European conference trip can emit over one tonne of CO2 per scientist
bioengineer.orgResearchers at ISTA audited emissions from ten magnetic resonance conferences held between 2016 and 2025. They found that a typical European meeting produces 1.2 to 1.3 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per attendee when flights are taken, and intercontinental trips can reach four to five tonnes. The study accounts for rail infrastructure, aviation radiative forcing, and airport construction, and it provides open data and scripts for other fields. Location matters most. Moving EUROMAR to a central venue like Frankfurt or Vienna could cut per attendee emissions by more than half. Hybrid two-site formats could save around 25 percent, while train travel over short and medium distances cuts emissions by 75 to 95 percent compared with flying. For scientists and conference organizers, the actionable takeaway is that venue choice and modal shift are bigger levers than hotel or catering choices.
