Stronger CO2-absorbing concrete made with zeolite and bamboo biochar: study results and potential uses
sciencedaily.comResearchers in India have developed a concrete mix that is both stronger than standard concrete and able to pull CO2 from the air. The formulation replaces fine aggregate with zeolite at 50% and cement with bamboo biochar at 1%. In lab tests, the mix boosted compressive strength by 7.48% and tensile strength by 15%, while capturing about 1.2 grams of CO2 per day in a carbonation chamber. The work is still a proof of concept. The authors note that durability and long-term carbon uptake need more testing before the material can be used in real projects. If it holds up, this approach could give road pavements, parapet walls, and sewer pipes a second job as passive carbon removal systems, especially in urban or industrial areas with higher CO2 levels.
