A two-year field study in China's Yellow River Delta found that adding straw or biochar to manure-amended saline soil raised soil organic carbon by about 19% compared with manure alone. But the two amendments work through different routes. Straw feeds soil microbes and increases microbial necromass carbon, while biochar improves soil structure and physically protects carbon inside larger aggregates.
