Straw and Biochar Reshape Soil Organic Matter: New Study on Humic Acid Structure and Carbon Storage

Researchers at Shenyang Agricultural University found that straw adds reactive, oxygen-rich compounds while biochar provides a stable aromatic matrix. Together, they form humic acid that is both chemically active and structurally persistent, challenging the idea that soil carbon must trade reactivity for stability. The work used advanced analysis tools to track humic acid formation over 180 days. Straw alone increased biodegradability, biochar alone increased persistence, but the combination created a more balanced molecular network. The authors say this helps explain why mixing straw return with biochar amendment could improve soil fertility and long-term carbon storage. Field testing across different soils and climates is still needed, but the findings offer a molecular basis for designing better soil carbon management practices.
