London-based StratX has raised $1.2 million to deploy landfill covers that use methane-consuming microbes and alkaline compounds to capture emissions. The funding round was led by Neglected Climate Opportunities, part of the Jeremy and Hannelore Grantham Foundation, with participation from CarbonFix. StratX provides the covers free to municipalities and generates revenue by selling carbon credits, sharing the proceeds with local partners. The startup plans pilot projects in South America and Africa. Terraset has committed to pre-purchase the carbon credits through a revolving fund backed by the Schmidt Family Foundation, giving StratX upfront capital for deployment. The approach aims to reduce financial barriers for cities while producing verifiable avoided emissions credits.
