The City of Stockholm has committed to purchasing 50,000 tonnes of permanent carbon removals annually for 15 years. This deal supports a Bio-energy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) project at the Värtan bio-cogeneration plant, which is expected to be operational by 2028. Captured CO2 will be compressed into liquid form and stored in sedimentary bedrock beneath the North Sea. The initiative is part of Stockholm's broader goal to become climate positive by 2030 and fossil fuel free by 2040.
