The City of Stockholm has signed a multi-year contract to purchase 750,000 tons of carbon dioxide removal from Stockholm Exergi. The removals will be generated by a new BECCS facility at the Värtaverket energy port, delivering 50,000 tons annually over fifteen years. The facility, expected to be operational by 2028, aims to capture 800,000 tons of CO2 per year. The captured carbon will be shipped to Norway for permanent sub-seabed storage, supporting Stockholm's goal to be climate positive by 2030.
