Steyr and TU Wien are working on a research tractor called Hytrac that runs on hydrogen through an internal combustion engine. It is based on the Steyr Expert and uses an electric power-split eCVT developed by VDS Holding. The idea is to pair the tractor with on-farm hydrogen production from biomass, wind, or solar, plus storage and refuelling, so farms can cut diesel use and gain more energy independence. The project builds on Steyr's earlier FCtrac concept and is aimed at heavy work where battery-electric tractors don't last long enough. Hydrogen has higher energy per kilogram than diesel, but it needs bulky high-pressure tanks. The article notes infrastructure and investment are still missing. That makes Hytrac more of a demonstration of what a hydrogen farm system could look like than a near-term product.
