Star Home Design in Tanzania Cuts Child Malaria 44% and Lowers Embodied Carbon by 57%

Children living in these homes had 44% less clinical malaria, 30% less diarrhoea, and 18% less pneumonia compared to those in traditional mud and thatched houses. The design includes elevated bedrooms, ventilated shade net walls, mosquito screens, clean water harvesting, and improved cook stoves. The Star home uses 73% less concrete and produces 57% less embodied carbon than a conventional cement block house. Material costs are 24% lower. Over a 50 year lifespan, the design returns four times the investment when health savings, water savings, and energy reductions are included. Passive cooling eliminates the need for air conditioning. The trial involved 110 Star homes and 513 traditional houses with random allocation and weekly health checks. The findings show that modest changes in layout and materials can deliver large health and environmental benefits. Wider adoption will require local adaptation, supply chains for screens and nets, and secure land tenure to access financing.
