Stansted Airport Solar Farm Now Operational: 24,000 Panels, 17.2 MW DC, Net Zero Target by 2038
adsadvance.co.ukLondon Stansted has switched on a new on-site solar farm, the first at a London airport. It features over 24,000 panels, generating up to 17.2 MW DC and 12.8 MW AC fed directly into the airport's network. On sunny days, that can match the airport's peak demand, and annually it produces enough electricity to power around 7,000 homes. The project is part of Stansted's £1.1 billion transformation program and supports its goal of net zero emissions from direct operations by 2038. The solar farm also includes significant biodiversity measures, including a 19-hectare wildflower meadow, new trees, and 750 meters of hedgerows, delivering a 160% biodiversity net gain. Operated by Onsite Power, a division of EDF power solutions, the project demonstrates how airports can use on-site renewables to improve energy resilience, reduce costs, and cut carbon emissions. This is a concrete example of airport infrastructure moving toward cleaner energy sources.
