Sri Lanka has switched on the first project in a planned 300MW solar power programme. The 3MW ground-mounted plant in Veyangoda uses 640-watt bifacial panels and is expected to feed about 6.35 million kilowatt-hours into the national grid each year, cutting an estimated 4,340 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. The government says more solar projects are planned across the country, with private-sector participation invited for selected sites. Grid upgrades are also underway to handle a larger share of renewables. The moves support Sri Lanka's targets of 70% renewable energy by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2040.
