Sri Lanka is implementing its first utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to stabilize the national grid and reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels. The initial phase includes 16 projects providing 160 MW and 640 MWh of capacity to capture surplus solar power and discharge it during evening peak demand. By addressing daytime curtailment, where up to 400 MW of renewable energy is currently wasted, the government aims to create a carbon-neutral power sector by 2050. Plans are already in place for an additional 1 GWh of storage by 2027 to further support the transition to a fossil-free grid.
