Speira launches VALIS label for verified low-carbon aluminium with CO2 threshold under 4 tonnes per tonne

Speira has introduced a new carbon performance label called VALIS for its aluminium products. The label sets a verified CO2 threshold of less than 4 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per tonne of aluminium. Each product carrying the label comes with an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) independently verified by the Tetis Institute under ISO 14025:2006. This covers Speira's cold-rolled, hot-rolled, and coated products used in transport, shipbuilding, mechanical engineering, and architecture. The EPDs follow a cradle-to-gate approach and account for primary metal, internal and external scrap, and alloy surcharges. For the construction sector, these declarations support green building certifications like BREEAM, LEED, and DGNB. The label aims to reduce internal validation effort for buyers while providing a documented basis for ESG reporting and customer requirements.

The 4 tCO2e per tonne threshold is interesting. For context, global average primary aluminium is around 16 tCO2e per tonne. So this is a real cut, but I wonder how much of that comes from scrap content vs process improvements.

Good point. Speira runs hydro powered smelters in Norway and Germany. That grid factor does a lot of the heavy lifting here. The EPD covers cradle to gate including scrap inputs, so the alloy mix matters too.

The EPD and third party verification under ISO 14025 is the part that actually matters for CBAM compliance and green building certs. Without that paper trail, a low carbon claim is just marketing. This gives buyers something they can hand to auditors.

For architects and facade contractors, having an EPD ready to go saves weeks of paperwork on BREEAM or LEED projects. The 4 tCO2e threshold is decent for rolled products. Would like to see how the scrap allocation method works in the EPD though.
