A carbon sequestration project in southwest Louisiana is drawing opposition from residents worried about drinking water. Gulf Coast Sequestration wants to build monitoring and injection wells near the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge, and its permit application is moving forward despite Governor Jeff Landry's moratorium on new carbon capture applications. The project is exempt from the order and sits on a priority list. Opponents point to the Chicot Aquifer, which supplies drinking water for 15 parishes across the region. They say testing wells could threaten that supply. The company says it owns the land and the geology is suitable, and the Louisiana Department of Conservation & Energy is still reviewing the permit. A separate GCS project in Cameron Parish is also awaiting a final decision.
