South Tyneside Council has voted 35 to 11 to rescind its 2019 climate emergency declaration, a move backed by the Reform UK-led council. The motion argues that core services, economic growth, and cost of living should take priority over non-statutory climate targets. It asks officers to review all policies and spending linked to the declaration and commit only to affordable, evidence-based environmental initiatives. Opposition councillors and environmental campaigners argue the decision creates a false choice between climate action and local services. They note the council already assesses affordability and value for money before spending. The Green group leader said there is no evidence rescinding the declaration will save money or improve services. The vote followed a protest outside South Shields Town Hall.
