South Pole and Gaïago have issued Europe's first carbon credits under Gold Standard's Soil Organic Carbon Framework Methodology. The first tranche covers 6,000 verified hectares across farms in France and Belgium. The full European Soil Revitalization Programme spans 727 farms and more than 39,000 hectares, with 264,174 tCO2e of removals forecast for the first crediting period. The program requires participating farmers to adopt regenerative practices such as reduced tillage and year-round cover cropping, and to apply Gaïago's NUTRIGEO L biostimulant. It uses the FAO GSOC MRV protocol and aligns with the FAO RECSOIL Initiative. South Pole handles carbon asset development and verification, while Gaïago operates the program on the ground. For corporate buyers, the issuance adds a new European source of verified land-based removals. It comes as SBTi's evolving Corporate Net-Zero Standard increases attention on credible removal supply. The main test now is whether the model can scale beyond the initial 6,000 hectares while keeping measurement and verification credible.
