South Korea's 2024 R&D cuts halted 338 projects, including carbon neutrality and CCUS research
koreajoongangdaily.comA South Korean government survey found that the 2024 national R&D budget cut of 4.6 trillion won halted 338 research projects and reduced funding for nearly 70 percent of projects that continued. Carbon neutrality studies, hydrogen research, carbon capture utilization and storage, and eco-friendly plastic technology were among the areas hit. The science ministry report also showed 8,631 researchers left affected projects, with many leaving academia entirely. The cuts were not limited to climate work. Basic research projects were broadly affected, with two-thirds seeing their funding reduced. The science ministry and education ministry saw more than 93 percent of their projects lose money. The government now plans to raise the 2025 R&D budget to 39.5 trillion won and has promised not to cut carryover project funding, but the survey shows the damage to research continuity and researcher trust will take time to repair.
