South Korea Plans Full GVCM Carbon Market Launch Next Year, Digital Asset Credits Under Review
en.bloomingbit.ioSouth Korea says it will fully launch its GVCM international carbon market next year. The government plans to issue credits in two classes: GVCM A for projects approved by host countries, which can count toward national climate targets and international aviation rules, and GVCM NA for projects without host country approval, meant for voluntary corporate use. Trading will run through the Korea Exchange, and key project data such as operators and emissions reductions will be recorded on a blockchain. The government is also reviewing whether to issue credits in digital-asset form and wants to convert emissions-reduction results from World Bank and Green Climate Fund projects into GVCM credits. The move could give South Korean companies a structured way to source international offsets. The open question is how project baselines and host country approvals are verified, since those rules will determine whether GVCM credits carry real environmental weight.
