South Korea's Ministry of SMEs and Startups is recruiting climate tech startups for a new public-private open innovation program called Everyone's Challenge Climate Tech. The program connects startups with demand firms including Korea Water Resources Corporation, Korea Electric Power Corporation, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. Selected startups will work on real on-site tasks like drone-based solar inspection, algae bloom detection, and shipyard carbon emissions tracking. Each startup can receive up to 140 million won in commercialization funding per task. The program targets startups with seven years or less of business operations. Applications run from June 16 to July 10, 2026. Demand firm officials will serve as evaluation committee members to select startups with strong collaboration potential. This initiative reflects South Korea's push to link large corporation and public institution needs with innovative climate tech solutions for carbon neutrality and energy transition goals.

Interesting to see KEPCO and Hyundai E&C listed as demand firms. The real test will be whether these collaborations actually lead to deployed projects or just end at prototype stage.

Agreed. The 140 million won per task is decent for early stage work but that is around 100k USD. Not enough to scale anything. Feels more like a matchmaking exercise.

The drone solar inspection task is one of the more concrete ones. That tech exists and has clear ROI. The algae bloom detection sounds more like a water utility problem than climate tech.

Algae blooms are climate related. Warmer water and changing rainfall patterns drive them. But I agree the framing here is loose. They are bundling water management under the climate tech label.

Not seeing much on building efficiency or industrial heat in the listed tasks. That is where a lot of the actual emissions are in Korea. Hope they expand beyond the flashier tech.

The shipyard carbon tracking task is interesting though. Heavy industry is hard to decarbonize and real time monitoring is a necessary first step. If that scales it could matter.
