South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT has launched a large-scale CCU megaproject to capture carbon dioxide from power generation and steelmaking and convert it into high-value products like sustainable aviation fuel and methanol. The project aims to reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by over 600,000 tons by 2035. Led by LG Chem and POSCO Holdings, the initiative will demonstrate e-SAF production from thermal power plant emissions and synthesis gas from steel industry emissions. The government is investing 238 billion won over five years, with demonstrations expected by 2030. The project also includes direct air capture technology and CO2-to-oil conversion, potentially producing 900,000 tons of synthetic crude oil annually by 2040.
