South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced plans to support hydrogen-based steelmaking and introduce a low-carbon steel certification system. The measures come as the steel industry accelerates its shift toward high value-added, low-carbon production. A new Special Act on Strengthening the Competitiveness of the Steel Industry and Transition to Carbon Neutrality takes effect June 17. The government will also foster companies that process recycled steel resources and negotiate steel safeguard tariff rate quotas with the EU to stabilize exports. The announcement was made at the 27th Steel Day event in Seoul, where 31 industry figures received awards for contributions including carbon reduction process technology and special steel development.
