South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has selected 10 smart construction technology demonstration projects and 12 small and medium enterprises to push AI and automation in building. One selected project is a construction site surplus resource circulation and carbon management system, which directly targets emissions tracking and waste reduction on site. The government provides up to 25 million won per demo and 30 million won for prototype production, with results shared at the 2026 Smart Construction EXPO in November. The program also names 12 SMEs as smart construction leaders, including ITONE for safety platforms, Hansung Modular for integrated panels, and KCT ENC for collapse risk monitoring. The focus on off-site construction and carbon management signals a shift toward lower carbon building methods in South Korea. The selected technologies will be demonstrated on real construction sites for six months, with findings presented publicly later this year.

South Korea putting money into carbon management on construction sites is interesting. The surplus resource circulation system could actually cut waste if it scales. 25 million won per demo is small but enough to test.

Agreed. The carbon management system is the one that matters here. But 25 million won is about 18k USD. That is barely enough for a pilot. Hope they actually share real data at the EXPO.

The carbon management system is interesting but I want to know what it actually measures. Embodied carbon in materials? Operational energy? Without that detail it is just a buzzword. Also 6 month demo is short for construction.

Good point. The policy intent is there but the implementation is thin. They need to define what carbon management means and how it ties to national emissions targets. Otherwise it is just a checkbox for companies.

Also curious about the ready-mixed concrete quality tech. Concrete is a huge carbon source. If they can reduce waste or lower cement content through AI, that could actually move the needle. But 30 million won for prototype is tiny.
