South Korea is shifting its energy focus toward hydropower and pumped-storage to compensate for stalled offshore wind projects. These technologies provide essential baseload power and large-scale energy storage, which are critical for stabilizing the grid as AI data centers drive up electricity demand. Currently, Korea relies heavily on foreign technology from Japan and Europe for its hydro facilities. To ensure energy security and reduce costs, the country is looking to accelerate domestic technological development and reduce dependence on overseas suppliers.
