South Korea and Kyrgyzstan launch joint climate committee to accelerate carbon reduction projects under Article 6.2

South Korea and Kyrgyzstan held the first meeting of their Joint Committee on Climate Change Cooperation in Bonn, Germany, alongside UN climate talks. The two countries agreed on implementation procedures for international carbon reduction projects and operational guidelines for the committee. This framework is designed to boost private investment and speed up greenhouse gas reduction efforts under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement, which lets countries count emissions cuts made abroad toward their own climate targets. Kyrgyzstan is now the second country after Mongolia to adopt rules for developing and certifying carbon credit projects with South Korea. Both nations aim for carbon neutrality by 2050. South Korea focuses on legally mandated emissions cuts, while Kyrgyzstan emphasizes green development and climate finance. The next step is to get key projects approved ahead of the inaugural Korea-Central Asia Summit in Seoul this September.
