South African mining companies are increasing investments in private renewable energy projects to maintain access to global markets. With the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) now in effect, reducing embedded emissions in minerals like platinum and iron ore has become a commercial necessity. Beyond regulatory pressure, mines are using hybrid solar and battery storage systems to hedge against rising electricity tariffs and grid instability from Eskom. These projects aim to lower Scope 2 emissions while ensuring a continuous power supply for energy intensive operations.
