The SA H2 Fund has committed 4 million USD in development funding for a new facility in Gauteng that converts municipal sewage sludge into green methanol. The project will process 90,000 tonnes of waste annually and utilize a 10 MW electrolyser powered by solar and wind energy. This circular economy initiative aims to produce 14,300 tonnes of green methanol per year, potentially cutting 119,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. The facility also plans to return industrial grade water to the local utility, supporting water security in the Vaal region.

Turning sewage sludge into methanol is a solid use of waste, but I want to see the actual lifecycle assessment. 119k tonnes of CO2 avoided sounds good on paper, but the energy intensity of the conversion process usually tells the real story.

The 10 MW electrolyser is the main draw here. They are mentioning a 50 MW co located solar plant and wheeling for wind. My question is about the capacity factor. If the electrolyser runs 24/7, how much of that wind power is actually guaranteed through the wheeling framework?

This fits into the Hydrogen Society Roadmap, but the real test is the commercial structuring. 4 million for development is a start, but the jump to 26 million in equity depends entirely on the off-take agreements for that methanol. Who is actually buying it?

The water return is actually the most interesting part for me. Returning 60,000 cubic metres of industrial water to the utility is a huge win for the Vaal region. Often these fuel projects ignore the local resource stress, so this is a plus.
