South Africa is working toward a 2030 goal to limit greenhouse gas emissions to 420 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. The country is currently leveraging the Just Energy Transition partnership and recent funding from Germany to move away from its heavy reliance on coal and oil. While South Africa contributes about 1% of global emissions, the transition is critical because fossil fuel power stations and transport account for over 80% of its national greenhouse gas output.
