South Africa Industrial Development Strategy 2026: Green growth, energy security, and decarbonisation priorities
greenbuildingafrica.co.zaSouth Africa has launched its Industrial Development Strategy (IDS) 2026, an ambitious plan to revitalise manufacturing, boost energy security, and drive green growth. The strategy identifies affordable electricity as the top enabler of industrial competitiveness and prioritises decarbonisation, diversification, and digitalisation as core pathways. It includes scaling renewable energy, expanding transmission infrastructure, supporting green hydrogen and battery value chains, and leveraging carbon credits and just energy transition finance. The strategy also targets critical minerals beneficiation for lithium, manganese, and cobalt to capture more value from the global energy transition. It proposes recycling carbon tax revenues into industrial decarbonisation programmes and using the African Continental Free Trade Area to expand regional green supply chains. Implementation will rely on development finance, blended finance, and public private partnerships.
