Somerset winter gritting overhaul cuts carbon with route specific forecasts, earns national award shortlist
somerset.gov.ukSomerset Council and Kier have been shortlisted for the Net Zero Project of the Year at the 2026 Department for Transport Special Recognition Awards for a winter road maintenance project that cuts carbon while keeping roads safe. The new approach replaces four broad forecast areas with 23 route specific weather assessments, so gritting and salt treatment only happen where they are actually needed. The project, developed through the DfT funded Live Labs 2 programme, cut combined fuel and salt emissions by 70,867 kgCO2e in the 2026/27 season, according to the council. It took less than nine months to move from concept to implementation across Somerset's 6,765 km road network, of which about 1,450 km is treated in winter. Targeted gritting of this kind is a practical example of how local authorities can reduce emissions and operating costs without compromising highway safety. The winners are announced later this month in Blackpool.
