Solis Capital has launched Verdantis.io, a carbon project origination and development platform focused on Central Asia. The platform identifies, screens, and prepares early-stage carbon projects in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan for financing and carbon credit offtake. Verdantis.io targets afforestation, reforestation, improved agricultural land management, soil organic carbon, methane avoidance, and ecosystem restoration projects. It provides upfront or milestone-based capital to project sponsors in exchange for future verified carbon credits. The platform is backed by Qarasu Astyk through its subsidiary Pro Carbon, with FG Capital Advisors supporting the financing strategy.

Central Asia is an interesting region for carbon projects. Kazakhstan has a lot of degraded land that could be restored. The article mentions MRV pathways and registry strategy which is good but I wonder how they plan to handle permanence risks for nature based projects in that climate.

The agribusiness connection through Qarasu Astyk gives them actual land access which is often the hardest part. Pro Carbon as a subsidiary suggests they have some operational experience. Still early stage though. Would like to see what methodologies they plan to use for soil organic carbon in drylands.

Kazakhstan has a carbon border adjustment mechanism coming from the EU eventually. Projects there could serve both compliance and voluntary markets. The AFOLU focus makes sense given the agricultural land base. Just hope they use robust remote sensing for MRV rather than relying on self reporting.

Carbon stream financing is a model that works better when you have clear offtake agreements. The article says they target institutional buyers but doesnt name any. Also methane avoidance in Central Asia could mean livestock or coal mine methane. Those have very different MRV requirements.

The voluntary carbon market needs more platforms that actually prepare projects properly instead of just trading credits. Verdantis claims to handle baseline assessment and additionality analysis which is where many projects fail. But without registry specifics its hard to assess integrity.
