The system connects solar panels directly to the water heater, using the tank as thermal storage and removing the need for batteries or inverters. Researchers tested the setup in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Lusaka, Luanda, Kinshasa, Nairobi, and Lagos. In Johannesburg, a high-demand household could avoid over two tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. The biggest savings come in cities with higher electricity tariffs like Nairobi and Cape Town, while subsidized markets like Luanda show weaker financial returns. The technology is a low-cost, scalable retrofit that could ease grid pressure and lower energy bills. The study highlights that installation angle matters more in higher latitude cities, and that equatorial cities tolerate orientation errors better. Overall, the approach offers a practical path to reduce residential power demand without complex hardware.
