Researchers at the University of Adelaide have developed a solar-driven photoreforming process that converts plastic waste into hydrogen, syngas, and other industrial chemicals. This method uses photocatalysts to break down carbon-rich plastics at lower temperatures than traditional methods. While the technology shows promise for reducing plastic pollution and creating low-carbon fuels, challenges remain regarding catalyst durability and the need for strict plastic sorting. Further development is required to move from experimental 100 hour runs to industrial scale operation.
