Researchers at the University of Adelaide are testing a process called solar-powered photoreforming to turn plastic waste into hydrogen and industrial chemicals. By using photocatalysts activated by sunlight, the method aims to reduce the energy required compared to traditional water-based hydrogen production. While the technology offers a way to recover value from plastic pollution, significant hurdles remain. The team is currently working to improve catalyst durability and find efficient ways to process mixed plastic waste and purify the resulting fuel.
