May 2026 solar overtook coal in the US monthly mix for the first time. 12.8% vs 12.2%. Not a huge gap but the trend line is clear. Coal hit an all time low in April and barely bounced back.

What I find interesting is that 74% of Q1 solar installations were in states Trump won. Texas and Florida doing heavy lifting. Policy headwinds at federal level but state level and economics still driving deployment.

Worth noting the article says electricity demand is rising for AI and manufacturing. That load growth is a double edged sword. If solar can't interconnect fast enough, gas fills the gap. Storage economics become critical here.
