Solar carports in Canada: How parking lots are generating clean energy and cutting emissions

At Mohawk College in Hamilton, a solar carport saves the school $150,000 to $160,000 per year in energy costs and cuts emissions equivalent to a two acre forest. The largest in the country sits at a CPKC railway headquarters in Calgary, covering 500 cars and cutting 2,600 tonnes of carbon annually. These structures also reduce urban heat islands and can power EV charging stations, making them a multi-benefit investment for campuses, businesses, and municipalities. Costs have dropped dramatically. Zac Jolliffe from VCT Group notes that a full carport now costs about what the panels alone cost 15 years ago. Mohawk College's carport reached payback in roughly four years. A 2024 Ontario Clean Air Alliance report found that covering half of Toronto's 7,000 open air lots could meet a quarter of the city's electricity needs and cut 1.9 megatonnes of emissions per year. The main barrier remains upfront cost, which is roughly double that of rooftop solar, but falling panel prices and Canadian made components from steel to batteries are making the economics work faster.
