Researchers are developing a new technique called soilsmology to create 3D maps of the world's soil. By using seismic waves and smartphone accelerometers, the Earth Rover Program aims to measure soil density, moisture, and carbon content without expensive drilling or satellite limitations. Accurate soil data is critical for climate negotiators and farmers. Because soils hold three times more carbon than the atmosphere, better measurement tools could improve carbon accounting and help prevent a global food crisis caused by soil degradation.
