Soil type determines if added carbon and nitrogen increase or reduce nitrous oxide emissions from farmland
eurekalert.orgA new study published in Nitrogen Cycling shows that the same carbon and nitrogen inputs can either increase or decrease nitrous oxide emissions depending on soil type. Researchers tested five Chinese farmland soils and found that soil pH and nitrate availability were the main factors controlling how microbial communities process nitrogen. Fluvo-aquic soil consistently produced the lowest nitrous oxide share, while black soil and red soil showed different limitations. The study warns that counting microbial genes alone is not enough to predict actual emissions. Effective mitigation strategies must be tailored to individual soil conditions rather than applied uniformly across regions.
