Interesting to see an open access operator picking up a cross border route without subsidies. The carbon angle is clear but the economics are the real test here. Six and a half hours is long enough that pricing has to be right to pull people off flights.

Yeah the pricing piece is key. If advance tickets really undercut air and coach then you might get modal shift. But walk up fares will tell the real story. Also wondering how occupancy looks in off peak months.

Does anyone know what the traction power source looks like along this corridor? Swedish west coast line is electrified but I think parts of the Norwegian side might still have diesel segments or limited catenary capacity. Would shift the actual emissions per passenger.

Good question. The Oslo to Gothenburg stretch is electrified on both sides. Sweden runs on 15 kV 16.7 Hz and Norway is the same system so no traction change issues. The real variable is grid carbon intensity which is low in both countries anyway. So the emissions claim holds up better than in most European corridors.

One thing the article doesnt mention is how this connects with the broader night train revival in Scandinavia. Snälltåget already runs Malmö to Berlin overnight. Now with this daytime link you can basically do Oslo to Berlin in one ticketed journey with a change in Malmö. That is a real network effect.
