The Sacramento Municipal Utility District has named Lora Anguay as its next CEO and general manager, effective August 2. Anguay previously served as SMUD's chief zero carbon officer, overseeing the retooling of the Cosumnes natural gas plant and adding over 1,430 megawatts of renewable and energy storage capacity. She takes over from Paul Lau, who led the utility's ambitious 2030 zero-carbon goal. Anguay's appointment comes as SMUD navigates a shifting energy market and works to eliminate 100% of greenhouse gas emissions from its electric generation by 2030. The utility serves about 1.5 million people in the Sacramento area and employs roughly 2,400 workers. Under her leadership, SMUD aims to scale sustainably while maintaining affordable rates and reliable power.
