Hyperscaler data center power demand is projected to nearly triple to over 130 GW by 2030, but U.S. grid interconnection timelines now stretch 3 to 7 years. This article outlines a gas-to-nuclear bridge strategy where behind-the-meter natural gas generation provides immediate capacity while small modular reactors (SMRs) are developed for long-term zero-carbon baseload power. Microsoft, Amazon, and Google have collectively signed over 10 GW of nuclear power contracts. However, SMRs remain years from commercial deployment. On-site gas turbines can be commissioned in 16 to 30 months, bypassing grid congestion and the interconnection trap that threatens to delay or cancel up to 20% of planned data center projects according to the IEA. The article proposes structured partnerships between infrastructure capital, conventional power developers, and nuclear innovators to transition sites from gas to nuclear thermal. This approach keeps AI growth on track while providing the stable demand profile needed to finance and deploy SMR technology at scale.
