Sligo Brewery Cuts Carbon Footprint with CO2 Recovery System and New Visitor Experience
independent.ieLough Gill Brewery in Sligo is investing 500,000 euros in a CO2 recovery system that captures and reuses carbon dioxide from fermentation instead of venting it into the atmosphere. The system, supported by Sligo LEADER, is among the first of its kind in Ireland's brewing sector and will reduce the brewery's reliance on purchased gas while lowering its overall carbon footprint. The family owned brewery is also building a new visitor experience with funding from Failte Ireland's Shared Island Coast to Coast Scheme, including a brew hall, tasting space, coffee shop, and event area to attract tourists and create local jobs. The brewery has been operating since 2016 and produces over 30 beers. Founder James Ward says the CO2 recovery system shows small independent breweries can lead on sustainability. The project combines operational efficiency with tourism diversification, aiming to strengthen revenue stability and reinvest profits locally. The new visitor experience is expected to open alongside the brewery's tenth anniversary celebrations.
